“But with art comes empathy. It allows us to look through someone else’s eyes and know their strivings and struggles. It expands the moral imagination and makes it impossible to accept the dehumanization of others. When we are without art, we are a diminished people — myopic, unlearned and cruel.” DAVE EGGERS
Thank you Dave for those eloquent words of truth. Thank you.
But now this is me, Uncle Funky speaking, and let me make something clear. I write but I’m an amateur, a dilettante, an outsider. This site contains my humble words, my voice, my truth. Calling myself an artist would be disrespectful to you, Tom, my beloved brother, and Anne, my niece as well as my very talented and very much still living artist friends. I know that all of you have taken great risks and worked very hard to develop the necessary skills and vocabulary of your mediums in which you share eloquently what you see, hear, and feel. But me? I confess with deep respect that I howl with an untrained and crude voice. I’m just an old man digging for my truth and howling from my heart. I hurt, I love, I carry pain, I carry joy, and I try to speak the truth. I hope you hear me dear friends and family. I pledge to you from the bottom of my heart that I am here, I see you, I respect and honor you. I walk with you.
